Snapshot: Post Fleur Morning Interviews

The morning of Wednesday, October 25, was Fleur Morning. Excited Seniors stood in the cold with colorful, glittery signs etched their Fleur’s name on them. The Fleurs, Junior girls, searched campus, anxiously anticipating who their Senior could be.

Each year, in preparation for Brunch, Seniors and Juniors are paired to create a lasting bond. The initial Fleur morning is the Senior’s introduction to their Junior Fleur, which then leads to the Junior decorating their Senior’s locker and making them a sign to hang on actual Brunch day.

Kaelyn Crosthwaite (‘25) explained that she was “very surprised.” She found her Senior, Abby Craig (‘24), according to the green bracelet Craig had made her, which matched the color of the sign. Crosthwaite says, “I was nervous because I had no idea who I had, but it was exciting. It was a good nervous.” Craig greeted Crosthwaite with a beautiful shamrock sign and a warm hug, which made Crosthwaite comfortable.

Three other Juniors—Sadie Webb (‘25), Kate Smigelski (‘25), and Carly Barnes (‘25)—shared similar sentiments. They were all excited, and some were told by other Seniors that they would love their pairings. While most did not know who their Seniors were, Webb deduced who her senior was through the hints given by her friends: “Amelia asked me what my Starbucks order was, and then Ellie asked me what my Starbucks order was, and then I was like, which Senior are Ellie and Amelia both close with?” This allowed her to narrow down to Elizabeth Harman (‘24). Webb was delighted with her Senior and the random pairing.

We then asked them whether or not they enjoyed the idea of having randomly assigned Juniors or if Seniors should be able to pick their Fleur. The general consensus was to keep the random selection to allow new bonds to be formed. Webb explained, “I think it should stay random. I think it would get kind of toxic otherwise.” Barnes chimed in and said, “I feel like it’s good to get someone random that you don’t know,” as the spirit of Fleur morning is to get to know someone new and form new connections.
