Most Collegiate upperclassmen are not at school early when they have free period first. Varsity baseball’s Will Quinby (’25), however, was at school by 8:00 a.m. on a recent Wednesday to drop off a Collegiate Kindergartener, Olivia, and a 2nd Grader, Jack. How did this carpool situation come about?
One day, when she was walking their dogs, Quinby’s mother Amy ran into a neighbor who needed help getting their kids to Collegiate in the morning. Amy volunteered Will and said he was happy to help. If his passengers get antsy, Quinby has found that the most efficient way to settle down Olivia, and, in turn, her brother, is by playing Taylor Swift. (We think he is using the kids as an excuse for playing her music.) Quinby normally drives Olivia and Jack to school two times a week, and he enjoys their company in the mornings.
On the day we interviewed him, March 27, Quinby had an early dismissal at 1:50 p.m. for an away varsity baseball game against Steward School. Quinby informed us that morning that there was a chance the game would have to be rescheduled due to rain, and he was right. Quinby plays centerfield and hits as the 9th spot in the batting rotation. Known for his vibrant red hair and amazing speed when running the bases, Quinby has adopted the nickname “The Flash.” Quinby fully embraces the name but admits that sometimes it gets old.
