The Tavern: A Hidden Gem

It was a regular Friday night for me and my friends as we decided where to eat dinner. The Tavern quickly came to mind as it is an easy option. It is a great environment that we all have been to and enjoyed. The Tavern, a local restaurant just off the intersection of Patterson and Three Chopt Roads in Richmond, is a perfect place to go with friends and family to have an amazing time and eat delicious food. The Tavern is a comforting place that serves all types of food, from pasta to burgers, sandwiches, and more.

When entering the restaurant, we were quickly met with a host who told us we could sit at any open table we could find. There were only a few open tables left when we sat down, as it was a busy Friday night. Henry Brost (‘26), eager to sit down and have some tasty food, insisted that we bring playing cards to enjoy while waiting for dinner. Before getting out the cards, we were met quickly by our waitress to get drinks.

When looking at the menu and deciding what to get, JD Chen (‘26) said, “I felt like it was too hard to choose what to get, because there was nothing that looked bad on the menu.” Chen ended up getting a pesto dish with shrimp and two pieces of bread on the side. When talking about his dish, he said, “It was a perfect ratio of parmesan cheese to pesto sauce; they complimented one another very well.” With a wide variety of food to choose from, there is nowhere you can go wrong with eating for dinner. Teddy Revere (‘26) quickly decided on the barbeque sandwich. The sandwich looked very appetizing, as it came with fries. Revere said, “The sandwich was very good and something I would come back and get sometime soon.”

After we ordered our food and played some cards, the food came pretty fast, as it was a busy Friday night with some college football on TV. The Tavern seems like a popular spot to watch some sports, as there is a TV visible anywhere you sit. All the food looked and tasted amazing, and no one had anything negative to say about the food or the restaurant.

When asked about the Philly cheesesteak he got, Brost replied, “I would say it was amazing. It was well seasoned, with really good charred peppers and onions, and the cheese was amazing.”

I ordered the very tasty chicken alfredo pasta. The sauce was amazing, and the seasoning on the dish complemented the pasta and the chicken very well. It also came with two pieces of garlic bread that topped off the meal, something all pasta dishes should have.

The Tavern also has a bar area to get some drinks and food, along with an outdoor sitting area for warmer days and nights. The Tavern is a great place to get some comfort food with friends and family while having access to a TV from anywhere you sit. The service was really friendly and quick, especially for a busy night, along with a great environment. Overall, I give the restaurant an 8.9/10. It is somewhere you should visit if you haven’t already.
