As the 2025 Spring Choral Concert approached, Ryan Blevins gave The Match an inside look last month into his day-to-day schedule as Middle and Upper School Choral Director. For the chorus department, the fall season is usually packed full with various events, but as the spring arrives, the schedule starts to relax, with the Choral Concert being Blevins’s main focus.
On the evening of Thursday, April 24, students ranging from Grades 5th-12th performed in the Spring Choral Concert in Oates Theater. The concert theme, Songs of the Sky, was inspired by the song “Measure Me, Sky!” by Elaine Hagenberg, encouraging the listeners and students to take hold of their limitless potential. To resonate with this theme, Blevins also chose the songs “Defying Gravity” from the musical Wicked, “A Sky Full of Stars” by Coldplay, and “In The Stars” by Benson Boone. In a preview of the choral concert in the Upper School Assembly on Wed., April 23, Blevins led the chorus in their performances of “Measure Me, Sky!” and the traditional spiritual “Will The Circle Be Unbroken?”
Blevins builds the theme for each concert before choosing the specific songs being performed. After feeling inspired by a few songs with the same theme, Blevins builds the setlist, incorporating songs from various genres with similar underlying messages. He is also open to student input, occasionally choosing songs for the setlist based on student requests.
